On May 29, Dr. Carmel Mevorach, Associate Professor in Cognitive Neuroscience at the School of Psychology, University of Birmingham, visited the Department of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences at Zhejiang University. The delegation was received by Dr. Hu Yuzheng (Associate Head of the Department), Dr. Kong Xiangzhen (Assistant to the Head of Department), and Dr. Gong Mengyuan (Assistant to the Head of Department), among others.

In the morning, Professor Mevorach delivered an insightful lecture entitled “A dimensional approach to attention control” to faculty and students of the Department. The lecture highlighted that individual differences in attentional control capacity contribute to understanding mental health conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). He shared his team’s research outcomes from refining classical experimental paradigms to reveal the underlying neural mechanisms, and discussed the potential of non-invasive brain stimulation interventions. The presentation effectively demonstrated the bridging role of this research between basic psychology and mental health.

At midday, a cooperative meeting was held, chaired by Dr. Hu Yuzheng. On behalf of the Department, Dr. Hu extended a warm welcome to Professor Mevorach and briefly introduced the Department’s educational history, disciplinary characteristics, and development plans, as well as the prospects for international collaboration in psychological science and cognitive neuroscience between the two institutions. Professor Mevorach provided a detailed introduction to the organizational structure, research directions, and key laboratories of the School of Psychology at the University of Birmingham. The two sides exchanged ideas and proposals concerning student exchanges, short- and long-term visiting programmes, research collaboration, joint training, and academic exchanges. Professor Mevorach also toured the Department’s laboratories, teaching and research facilities, and the campus environment, expressing appreciation for Zhejiang University’s disciplinary development and campus culture.
