Abstract

This talk reviews studies on finances and romantic relationships in young adulthood. Finances refer to the ownership and management of money by either partner or both. Romantic relationships refer to the formation and quality of romantic relationships. The primary foci in this talk are the reciprocal and circular associations between finances and romantic relationships. Realizing that money—in addition to satisfying material needs—carries a lot of psychological meanings (e.g., a symbol of self-worth, security, and privilege), this talk also reviews studies on how attachment orientations and power may relate to finances and romantic relationships. Collectively, this talk aims to provide an overview of how young adults navigate through the world of money in romantic relationships.
