Lecture Abstract:

School bullying is relatively common in elementary and middle schools and seriously affects students' mental health and socio-emotional development. What risk and protective factors influence school bullying and mental health?

Social and Emotional Learning is the process through which children and adults learn to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Based on Social and Emotional Learning theory and research on school bullying, we have developed a series of curricula using children's stories and behavioral training to enhance prosocial behaviors, foster positive peer relationships, and reduce school bullying among elementary school students. Research indicates that students who participated in this curriculum demonstrated more important prosocial behaviors, reported more positive peer relationships and defending behaviors, and experienced less school bullying compared to other students (Wang, Couch, Rodriguez, & Lee, 2015; Wang & Goldberg, 2017; Scott, Wang, & Cheong, 2023).

By attending this lecture, participants will learn about the protective factors against school bullying and understand how to design psychology lessons based on Social and Emotional Learning theory. These lessons aim to address school bullying, promote peer relationships, enhance elementary school students' prosocial behaviors, and reduce school bullying.
